Compressed Air Meters-Drill Guides

Drill Guides

Drill Guides are required in most situations to successfully install any CDI flowmeter.  The meter's flow-sensing probes project into the pipe, and these guides ensure that the drilled holes are properly aligned.  If the pipe can be placed in a milling machine to locate holes, a Drill Guide may not be necessary.

Drill Guides are reusable for multiple installations, so if you already have the right guide you're in luck.  However, if you haven't purchased flowmeters from CDI before, you'll need a Drill Guide.

cdi-5200-dgCDI-5200-DG:  $65

This universal guide is for use with all CDI-25, 5200 and 6200 meters (pipe sizes 1.5" or less).  It includes a 3/16" drill bit, 3/16" and 1/4" hex wrenches, and an aluminum drill guide with two 3/16" drill bushings spaced 2.250" apart.  These guides can be attached to the pipe with a band clamp, a C-clamp or a chain clamp.

cdi-5400-u-dgCDI-5400-U-DG:  $95

This universal guide is for use with all CDI-5400 and 6400 meters (pipe sizes 2" or greater).  It includes a 3/16" drill bit, 3/16" and 1/4" hex wrenches, and an aluminum drill guide.  These guides can be attached to the pipe with a band clamp, a C-clamp, or a chain clamp.

cdi-5400-s-dgCDI-5400-S-DG:  $65

This guide is for use with 2" (50 mm) and 2-1/2" (63 mm) CDI-5400 and 6400 flow meters.  It includes a 3/16" drill bit, a 5/16" hex wrench, and an aluminum drill guide and is a cheaper option than the universal guide if you're only working with these specific pipe sizes. These guides can be attached to the pipe with a band clamp, a C-clamp, or a chain clamp.

cdi-5400-xxx-dgCDI-5400-XXX-DG:  $65 or $95

These half-ring drill guides are for use with specific sizes of CDI-5400 and 6400 meters (3" or larger). They attach to the pipe by bolting into the rear half-ring that comes with the meter.  They include a 3/16" drill bit, a 5/16" hex wrench, and a half-ring of the appropriate size to match your meter.  When ordering, specify "XXX" to match your meter size (either 30C, 30S, 40C, 40S, 50S, or 60S).  Guides for 4" pipe or smaller are $65, for 5" and 6" pipe are $95.

Installation Instructions

Requirements:

      • Meter may only be used with compressed air or nitrogen, at pressures up to 200 psig (except for the High Pressure modification).
      • Gas must be free of suspended oil or water droplets.  In compressed air systems, install downstream of a dryer.
      • Place meter at least 30 pipe diameters downstream of flow distortions (regulators, filters, sweeping elbows, pipe size changes, etc.).
      • For best accuracy, install with at least 20 diameters of straight pipe upstream of meter and 3 diameters downstream.

Precautions:

      • Wear eye protection.
      • Turn off the air supply and make sure pressure has bled down completely before drilling holes.
      • Secure the drill guide firmly in place.
      • Metal chips will enter the line.  Make sure there are filters in place downstream to prevent chips from causing personal injury or damaging equipment or products.
      • Make sure the holes being drilled match the probe arrangement in the meter.

Procedure:

    1. Shut off the supply of air to the pipe where the meter will be mounted and allow the pressure to bleed down.
    2. Orient the drill guide for visibility of the meter display.
    3. Attach the drill guide firmly in place (either with a band clamp, C-clamp, chain clamp, or by bolting to a half-ring, depending on the meter).
    4. Drill two holes and remove the resulting burrs from the outside surface of the pipe.
    5. Make sure the outside surface of the pipe is clean and smooth before installing the meter.
    6. Make sure the probes are clean - wipe down with alcohol or similar degreaser if dirty.
    7. Attach the meter to the pipe with a band clamp or bolted rings, depending on the meter.
